The insulator is commonly called as porcelain vase, and it is the insulation part which is used to support the conductors. Insulator can guarantee adequate insulation between the conductors and cross arms, towers. It should be able to withstand the vertical load and horizontal pull of the conductor in operation. It also suffers from sun, rain, climate change and chemical corrosion. Therefore, the insulator should have both good electrical properties and sufficient mechanical strength. It is very important that the insulator is good or bad for the safe operation of the lines. According to the structure, the insulators can be divided into support insulator, suspension insulator, anti-pollution insulator and hollow insulator. According to the usage, the insulators can generally be divided into three broad categories: line insulator, substation post insulator and bushings. In accordance with the insulator material, there are porcelain, glass and composite insulators at present.
Insulators used in overhead lines, normally have pin insulators, butterfly insulators, suspension insulators, porcelain cross arms, long rod insulators, stay insulators and so on. Insulator electrical failure has two types as flashover and puncture. Flashover occurs on the surface of the insulator, and we can see the burn marks, but it usually doesn’t lose insulation performance. Puncture occurs in the inside of the insulator, and electrical discharge is through the ceramic part between the metal cap and pin. The surface may not be seen signs, but it has lost the insulation properties, and the insulator may also be completely broken due to the arcing. For the puncture, we should pay more attention to the checking of the discharge trails and burn situation of the metal pins.
